Residing in New York City, Performer-composer Caleb A. Smith is a multi-faceted artist interested in varying levels of absurdity, randomness, stillness, dramatic textural changes, education as healing, and storytelling.  Caleb received formal study and graduated from both Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory. He’s grateful to have studied with Gary Bartz, Jason Moran, and Robin Eubanks.

As a performer, Caleb has had the honor of sharing the stage with luminaries such as five-time Grammy Award winning American visionary Lauryn Hill at the 2018 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony presented by HBO, a performance with trumpeter Terrance Blanchard as part of Cleveland’s Annual Tri-C Jazz Festival, and at the historic Karamu House for productions of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity. Being a native of Cleveland, Ohio, Caleb has performed in vast arrays of different musical settings including at small clubs, churches, weddings, theaters, sizable concert halls, parties, libraries, restaurants, parks, cemeteries, etc. Most recently, Caleb performed at the 2022 Annual Tri-C Jazz Festival with the Tri-C Jazz Fest All-Star Big Band led by bassist and composer John Clayton (featuring great musicians like Sean Jones and Rodney Whitaker). Even more recently, Caleb embarked on his first international tour with the Cleveland based group Mourning [A] BLKstar.  They performed throughout Europe in The Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. During this tour, the group performed at three major festivals (Le Guess Who?, Crossing Borders, and Cosmic Awakening at HWK). They also performed/recorded with acclaimed musician and visual artist Lonnie Holley.

Caleb is a pianist, trombonist, composer, writer and educator.
